As mental and scary as my time in Vietnam was, when I see photos from the war/read an article/catch someone talking about it, I get so nostalgic. They're such insanely resilient people who, as a nation, are a testament both the strength of all ages and genders when times couldn't get much more tough, and the terror that America can inflict. Children are still being born in Vietnam with severe birth defects due to the toxic 'agent orange' gas dropped overhead; driving through the country you can still clearly pick out the areas of forest that have grown differently to the rest, because of the damage of the chemicals. Families were born, taught, and lived in narrow, dark tunnels under the forests to avoid danger. I guess the decades of very hard times they've survived as a country has affected them in 'good' and 'bad' ways... I'd like to go back and give it another bash as a more street-wise traveller! <3
